West Virginia legislators have discussed changing our prevailing wage law in recent years. The change could put hundreds of local contractors out of business, slash wages for West Virginians, and hurt workplace safety. Local companies will be replaced by companies that import workers and take jobs away from hard working local men and women.
Billionaires from outside our state claim this change will help create jobs, but a recent study showed West Virginia contractors do not cost the state more and in some areas build more cheaply than contractors in states without prevailing wage. Losing prevailing wage will also drive other West Virginia citizen’s wages down.
The only way people like us can push back against the agenda of out of state billionaires and have a say in our state is by asking our legislators to stand with working families.
